A Matter of Perspective

A Matter of Perspective

19. Oct 2025 – 12. Apr 2026

In the second half of the Alf Lechner 100 anniversary year, we are placing Alf Lechner's work in the context of international positions. To this end, we are focusing on the aesthetic and social dimensions of material and inviting visitors to view art in the context of design, production and matter. With works by Phyllida Barlow, Robert Morris, Riki Mijling, Fred Sandback, Hanne Darboven, Gary Kuehn, Charlotte Posenenske, Reiner Ruthenbeck, Barry Le Va, Dadamaino, Carl Andre, Agnes Martin, Richard Serra, Imi Knoebel, Franz Erhard Walther, Eduardo Chillida, Donald Judd, Nasreen Mohamedi – and Alf Lechner.

The post-war avant-garde up to the 1980s was characterised by a radical redefinition of material, space and perception. Artists explored in different ways the conditions of matter, the presence of objects in space and the role of observation in the experience of art. What they had in common was a departure from metaphorical, figurative, or illusionistic conventions toward an art that developed out of materiality, form, and physical laws. Their approach was by no means homogeneous: between rigour and seriality, chance and instability, participation and engagement with space, a differentiated examination of form and process emerged. What they all have in common, however, is that they make the material itself the central subject of their art, thereby redefining the conditions of artistic experience. Art is no longer narrated, but experienced, felt and thought in the physical, psychological and intellectual relationship between human beings and matter.
